Oral- Conversation

In this segment, you will be given a topic and will then engage in a conversation on the spot. Fortunately, the topics that the examiner asks will be inter-linked with the passage and picture. Thus, it is advisable for you to prepare some topics before hand in the midst of waiting for your turn.

# Use the present tense.
# Grammatically, your sentences should be correct.
#Try to include your opinions
#Speak from prior experience about the given topic.
# DO NOT tell a white lie.
Example:
Question: Have you ever been to the zoo? Tell us the experience that you had there.
If you had never been to the zoo, then don't say that you had been there. The examiners might probe you further and eventually might know that you told them a white lie. Instead you could
Reply:
I've never been to the zoo but I would love to go there...( continue from here)
# Don't make it a question and answer section. Elaborate your opinions and entice the examiner into your conversation.
# Always mantain eye contact with the examiner.

Conclusion: Don't panic. Regular practice helps. Smile to show confidence and ease.

Oral- Picture Discussion

In this segment , you will be given a picture which can be depicted with any location e.g, playground, school etc
# Scrutinize, as you would in a crime scene, through the picture and pick out the event or issue presented in the picture e.g, Year End Sale, Art Festival etc.
# Always use the present tense or present contionous tense whenever needed. Do not use past tense as if you did, you would not score for language.
# Determine the place the scene is taking place in and use that as the opening statement.
Here are some examples:
~ This a scene in a school.
~
This picture depicts a scene at a playground
# Support your observations with vivid details or evidence.
Example:
If the picture shows a man with a smile on his face, then you could say:
The man looks happy because he is smiling.
# Always try to engage your own opinions or judgments in the discussion. You may use these sentence starters to help you.
~ In my opinion
~ I think
~ I suggest
~ I believe
However, students tend to use these starters very often during the discussion.
Example:
If the picture shows a boy tearing a page from the book in a library, then you can say:
This is a wrong act. We should never touch or damage public property and if there is a need to use them, we should make sure it is well-kept. If I were the boy,I would not behave like the way he did. As the saying goes, Actions have Consequences. In this case , the consequence of his actions is disastrous.
You should not say:
I think this is a wrong act.
Since the boy's actions is a wrong act, there isn't any need for you to say I think.
# Try to use the 5Ws and 1H. More known as 5 wives and 1 husband, its actual meaning is :
~ What is happening in the picture
~ Where is this happening
~ When is this likely to happen
~ Who are involved in this
~ Why could this be happening
~ How can this avoided

Practice makes perfect.

Oral- Reading Passage

The PSLE Format
# Reading - 10 marks
# Picture Discussion- 10 marks
# Conversation - 10 marks
_____________________________________
Preparation- 5 minutes
You should use the time fruitfully to focus on your reading passage as well as your picture. Usually, the conversation and picture is rather inter-linked. Hence, you could come up with questions in the midst of waiting for your turn inorder to deliver a clean speech later.

Reading Aloud
# Read clearly and loudly. Read with articulation and break long words into syllables so that your delievered speech will be smooth and would ease the ears of the listener.

# Read with expression whenever possible. Example if the sentence has a exclamation mark; " Come here, Justin!" then, you should read in a tone that tells the listener what emotions the person shares. Never read in a monotonous tone because that will bore the listener and you would not get the full points for that segment.

# Pause appropriately at punctuation marks like coma (,) full stop (.) etc.

# Read at the right pace. Students have a tendency to read fast as they posses a mindset ( Must finsh this fast) or read the passage slowly due to anxiety. Thus, regular practice is needed to ace your way in achieving 10/10 for this segment in the Oral Examination.

In conclusion, reading with confidence and regular practice leads you to the path of success. If others can , so can you.
